Use this tool to find out whether your non-domestic building project needs to comply with the Future Buildings Standard (Part L Volume 2, 2026 edition) or the current Part L 2021 standards. The tool follows the transitional provisions set out in Building Circular 01/2026.

Step 1: What type of work is this?

How this tool works

The compliance route depends on three factors: the type of work (new build vs existing building), whether the building is classified as higher-risk (HRB), and when the building control application was submitted relative to the enforcement date.

Non-HRB projects have an enforcement date of March 2027, while higher-risk buildings have a later date of September 2027. Projects submitted before the enforcement date may use transitional provisions if work commences within 12 months.
